What You Do Matters Personal Development Programme

In 2016,  we launched our Personal Development Programme for 17 to 25 years old living in London. The programme consists of 6 sessions working through different areas of their personal development. The aim of the programme is to provide tools and guidance to empower young people in London. We will be launching our PDP again this October 2017. If you are interested or know a young person who could be interested, please email jacquelinefernandez@whatyoudomatters.co.uk to receive our application form.

I could not recommend the PDP enough as it really is a programme which will allow you to develop

SABRINA ATTENDED OUR 5TH BIRTHDAY PARTY AND REUNITED WITH RHONA - AUGUST 2017

"Lets rewind back to September 2016. I was sitting in my room applying to be part of the personal development programme (PDP) PDP. Simply because,  I was doing something where I was constantly helping young people day in day out but I did not feel that I had anyone helping me to develop. I was working in a secondary school in Hackney as a behaviour mentor. Well I say 'working' but I was actually volunteering on a full time basis. Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm. This was a really hard and challenging experience as I was commuting over an hour every day from Essex to get there. In addition to this, I was working with some of the most disruptive students in the school. At times I would be sworn at, shouted at or have things thrown at me. These were the days where I would question whether I should of chosen to volunteer full time in a school.

I met Rhona (my mentor) at a point in my life where I did not know what my future career plans or aspirations were. I was just living everyday as it came with what felt like no real purpose. Rhona and I used to meet once a week after we had both had finished work. She always had a nice warm drink waiting for me, which I greatly appreciated as it was winter.

I spoke to Rhona regarding my concerns as to whether I had made the right choice to volunteer, rather then get a graduate job. She responded by saying " Sabrina, if you do not help those children who will."

What Rhona said to me on that one occasion stuck with me and it gave me the motivation to stay at the school. I honestly believe thatyou meet different people in your life at certain points of your life for a reason. Either for you to teach them something, or for you to learn from them.

I can say for certain that I learnt a lot from Rhona! I have never been a shy person but Rhona instilled in me, a new found confidence that I could achieve anything that I put my mind to. This takes me to now. I am currently writing this post as an Assistant Director for an educational centre for children.

I honestly do not think I would be in this position without Rhona because :

RHONA VELAQUEZ, WYDM TEAM MEMBER

RHONA VELAQUEZ, WYDM TEAM MEMBER

a) She persuaded me to carry on volunteering, and it was from volunteering I learnt so many invaluable skills and life lessons which I was able to use on the job application for my current job.

b) She made me believe that anything was possible if I just believed in myself. She is the very reason I even applied for the job.

I could not recommend the PDP enough as it really is a programme which will allow you to develop. Without it, I would not be where I am today so thank you Rhona, and thank you WYDM for providing me with the opportunity!

What I loved about the programme was that although there were set tasks we had to get through in the meeting. Rhona always took the time to check if I was ok and to find out how everything was going with me in general.

Rhona also took the time to get to know me as a person. This is something I greatly appreciated as it felt like I was just chatting to a friend. I do not think there is anything that we didn't discuss in our meetings, from food, to God to relationships.

It was also just refreshing being able to chat to someone who genuinely wanted to help in whatever way they could.

At the end of each meeting I was given homework. But I did not really view it as homework as it was just a task I had to complete within the week to further develop myself.

The meetings helped me re-evaluate a lot of things and it was always a warm welcoming environment.

Throughout life we mostly focus on helping others whether that be friends, family or a stranger. But it is important that we also take the time to help OURSELVES. So, If you want to better yourself but you do not know how, the PDP is for you! "
